DHL doesn’t need any introduction, it is the king in the freight industry,
Delivering air freight and sea cargo to Pakistan and rest of the world on a massive scale. It has initiated DHL-UN Development Programme (UNDP) to improve handling of relief goods with the help of UN under the name Get Airports Ready for Disaster (GARD). Number of Airports are the latest locations to get benefit for this marvellous programme,
Jaco Cilliers, UNDP country director, said while speaking at the event: “During disasters, airports frequently become the logistical hub where relief and emergency supplies are distributed. However, airports are often not equipped to handle the huge volumes of goods and surge traffic that follows in the immediate aftermath of any disaster.”
He further added that it is vital to enhance the preparedness of airports in order to ensure smooth rescue and relief efforts and business continuity. It will not only help in disaster situations but also in usual days when door-to-door cargo or relief goods parcels delivery is needed.
Chris Weeks, DHL director of humanitarian affairs, said on this event that through these GARD workshops, we will be able to work in close relation with the authorities all over the world, giving us the ability to analyse and define the capacities needed at airports in case if any natural disaster should occur.
It will also improve the overall coordination across numerous organisation which are involved in relief efforts. It gives us immense pleasure to announce that DHL has now completed over 30 GARD workshops at airports around the globe.
According to geologists, they consider India’s north east as the sixth most earthquake-prone belt in the whole world. This programme will play an important role for India to develop a disaster blueprint.
During the DHL GARD workshop the participants will be developing action plans on how to prepare the airport personnel better for emergencies, handling massive volumes of emergency aid goods, and passengers in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters.
